wellbutrin bottleWhat is Wellbutrin?  How can it cause injury?

Wellbutrin is a widely-used treatment method for depression.  Wellbutrin has also been approved to treat seasonal affective disorder, and to help people stop smoking.

The chemical name for Wellbutrin is Bupropion – a non-tricyclic antidepressant.  Bupropion is one of the most popular antidepressants, with more than 20 million prescriptions in 2007.

Wellbutrin can increase the risk of congenital heart defects.  The most common defect causes blood flow to be disrupted from the heart’s left chambers to the rest of the body. The defect often affects the aorta, narrowing the aorta dangerously.  In addition, Wellbutrin can cause seizures or suicidal thoughts.  Finally, Wellbutrin can be fatal to patients with a history of coronary artery disease.
