AMPLATZER® Septal Occluder

The AMPLATZER® Septal Occluder medical device is often used to plug an abnormal hole of the heart in the wall between the two upper chambers. The benefit of this device is that it can be utilized to close these holes without using open-heart surgery. An abnormal hole in the walls of the heart may occur naturally, in which case it is called an atrial septal defect (ASD). The device consists of two main parts, the delivery system and the implant itself. The delivery system transports the device to the position of the hole in the heart. The device itself stays in the heart to block the hole. The device functions somewhat like an umbrella, and is made from wire mesh and polyester fabric. The nonsurgical benefits of this procedure have caused the AMPLATZER® Septal Occluder to become widely used by physicians as an alternative to open-heart surgery and is considered a common alternative for ASD treatment.
