Texas Railroad Crossing Accidents and Motorcycles

In the United States, a train collides with a vehicle every 90 minutes.  All motorcycle drivers should take note of the following safety information:

  • Stop no closer than 15 feet (two motorcycle lengths) from the crossing.

  • A train can take a mile or more to stop.

  • If you are in traffic, do not move forward if you cannot safely clear the crossing.

  • If you get stuck in the crossing, immediately leave your motorcycle and call local police or the 800 number posted at the crossing to alert trains of your position.

  • Cell phones are the top distraction for all drivers involved in railroad crossing accidents.

Surprisingly, railroad crossing accidents involving motorcycles are common.  Trains kill or seriously injure approximately 2,400 people each year.  People often judge large objects as moving slower than smaller ones, and drivers commonly underestimate train speeds.  Accidents generally occur when the driver attempts to beat the train through the crossing, or because the driver simply fails to see the train coming.
