Maintenance for Texas Motorcycles

Responsible bikers should do a general inspection of their motorcycle frequently, ensuring the motorcycle is safe to operate.  Any identified problems should be scheduled for repairs as soon as possible.  A good preventive maintenance program is an excellent investment in safety.

Below is a sample motorcycle maintenance checklist:

  • Check headlight, tail lights and brake lights, turn signals, instrument and driving lights.

  • Test the kill button/switch and inspect overall wiring for chafing.

  • Check battery levels and clean terminals.

  • Inspect oil and fuel filters and screens and check lines for chafe and dry rot.

  • Check coolant and anti-freeze level, and check flow/pump/hoses.

  • Inspect brakes and adjust lever and pedal travel.

  • Check master cylinders for clean brake fluid and proper fluid levels.

  • Inspect brake pads and liners and replace if needed.

  • Inspect tires for even tread wear and cracking or cuts in side walls.

  • Inspect valve stems for dry rot.

  • Check tire pressure – do not over inflate especially in hot climates.

  • Inspect rims for dents or cracks, and carefully tighten loose spokes.

  • Check axles, axle nuts and hardware for tightness and wear.

  • Inspect drive chain or belt for excessive wear and adjust or replace as needed.

  • Check spark plugs.

  • Inspect air filters and if dirty, replace or clean depending on type.
