Improperly Loaded Cargo

Cargo loaded improperly can also cause trucking accidents.  Drivers can lose control of their commercial trucks if the cargo loaded is unbalanced or overweight.

Loading Cargo for Eighteen-Wheelers

Correct truck loading is very important – if the cargo shifts or leaves the 18-wheeler in transit, it can result in a serious accident.  Truck drivers should know the type of cargo they are transporting, as well as the weight.  In addition, correct placement of the cargo is critical to ensure the load is balanced and secure.  Trucking companies should use tie downs, nets and cargo bars to secure boxes and cargo in the back of a truck.  Finally, the truck driver or commercial trucking company should always inspect the cargo load before any trip.

Overweight Semi Trucks

Federal, state, and local regulations regulate the weight of semi trucks.  The weight of the cargo should be appropriate for the truck, and balanced properly so that the axles are not overloaded.  Overweight trucks can result in the following problems:

  • longer stopping distance;

  • bogs down going up hills;

  • speed increases on downgrades;

  • blowouts;

  • brake failure or brake strain;

  • center of gravity is elevated, making the truck more likely to roll over;

  • alters weight in the rear, reducing weight of the front tires; and

  • steering complications.
