Truck Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol

truck accidentDriving while intoxicated, whether under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is extremely dangerous.  In the United States, alcohol is estimated to play a role in 39 percent of vehicle-related deaths, at an expense of $51 billion each year.1 Alcohol also contributes to 44 percent of traffic fatalities in the United States.

Trucking While Intoxicated

Because their large vehicles can cause significant damage and injury, truckers have different rules and regulations governing their conduct.  For example, in Texas, the blood alcohol content for car drivers must be .08 percent or higher to be convicted for DWI.  However, the limit for truckers, because they handle heavy loads at high speeds, often transporting hazardous materials, is .04 percent or higher.

In addition, if a trucker is convicted of a DUI while operating their personal vehicle outside of work, they will still lose their commercial driver’s license.  Finally, truckers from other states will lose their commercial drivers license if convicted of a DWI in Texas.
