Crib Bumpers

Crib bumpers are typically used to prevent a baby’s head, arms or legs from becoming trapped between the slats of a crib.  However, all cribs now sold in the United States require slat gaps to be much narrower, preventing this type of injury.  Despite the absence of this risk, most cribs are still outfitted with crib bumpers, mainly for decorative purposes.

Crib bumpers are generally made of cotton, filled with a polyester padding.  A bumper pad is affixed to the crib using ties or Velcro straps.  The bumper can be removed for cleaning, but generally stays on the crib at all times.

1 Several organizations, including the Consumer Products Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics, have stated that crib bumpers are a potential risk when they are “pillow-like.”
