Automobile Maintenance

Responsible drivers should do a general inspection of their car frequently, ensuring the vehicle is inspected and approved.  Any identified problems should be scheduled for repairs as quickly as possible.  A good preventive maintenance program is an excellent investment in safety and reliability.   Below is a sample maintenance checklist:

Check each month:

  • oil level – add oil if low and check for leaks

  • hoses – replace if bulging, rotten, or brittle

  • belts – replace if worn, frayed or glazed

  • tire pressure

  • coolant or antifreeze

  • air filter – replace if dirty

  • inspect tires for leaks, damage, bulges, or tread wear

Check every three months:

  • oil and filter – change every 3,000 miles for most cars

  • windshield washer fluid

  • battery and power steering fluid

  • brake fluid

  • transmission fluid

  • battery terminals and cables – clean if corroded

Check every six months:

  • windshield wiper blades

  • headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals

  • horn

  • inspect brakes for wear and tear or slippage

  • ensure spare tire is fully inflated

  • inspect exhaust system for rust, damage, or loose parts

  • inspect shock absorbers for oil seepage or wear
