Alloderm, is a biologic mesh, made of donated human skin, which encourages cell and tissue regeneration. Cells are carefully removed from the cadaver dermis to prevent rejection by the patient. Why do surgeons use Alloderm? Alloderm is supposed to provide rapid revascularization to minimize the risk of infection. The mesh uses existing vascular channels to promote new blood vessel formation, and allows white blood cells to migrate to the implantation site. The mesh is supposed to resist adhesion formations in the bowel, and promote rapid repopulation of the patient’s cells. What types of procedures use Alloderm? Alloderm is most commonly used for hernia repair and breast reconstruction following a mastectomy. However, Alloderm is also used in dental work, and to treat severe lacerations and burns. Did the FDA recall Alloderm? Due to numerous adverse event reports, the manufacturers of Alloderm, LifeCell Corporation, issued a voluntary recall in 2005. How do I know if I have injuries due to Alloderm? Alloderm injuries include mesh explants, ring breakage, mesh tears, defective mesh, mesh perforations, adhesion issues, and mesh erosion. Alloderm injuries include infection, hernia recurrence, abscess, post-operative bulging, and pain/soreness. In some cases, an additional surgical procedure is required to remove the defective mesh.
