What are DePuy Hip Implants?

The hip joint is like a ball that fits into a socket. The socket portion of the hip is called the acetabulum. The femoral head at the top of the thigh bone (femur) rotates within the curved surface of the acetabulum, providing flexibility and mobility.

depuy hipDePuy Hip ASR XL Implants have three components:

1. a femoral stem is inserted inside the femur;

2. the femoral head is connected to the stem; and

2. the femoral head is fitted inside the acetabulum.

Once the three components are aligned, natural movement can be restored.

DePuy Hip Implant Problems

New data shows the ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System are prone to early failure. Within five years of implantation, about 12 percent of people who got the ASR resurfacing device, and 13 percent of people who got the ASR total hip replacement, have had them surgically removed and replaced with something else. The ASR resurfacing device was available only in the United States, while the ASR total hip replacement was available worldwide.

DePuy, citing recent data from the United Kingdom, said the replacement rate for these devices is about 4.5 percent, compared to 1.9 percent for conventional hip replacement devices. Signs of a defective implant include swelling, pain, and decreased mobility. Persistent symptoms can signal a loose implant, fracture of the bone around it, or dislocation of the implant’s ball and socket.
