Texas Railroad Crossing Accidents and Cars

In the United States, a train collides with a vehicle every 90 minutes.  All automobile drivers should take note of the following safety information:

  • A train can take a mile or more to stop.

  • Stop no closer than 15 feet (one car length) from the crossing.

  • If you are in traffic, do not move forward if you cannot safely clear the crossing.

  • Cell phones are the top distraction for all drivers involved in railroad crossing accidents.

  • If you get stuck at the crossing, get out of your vehicle, call local police or the 800 number posted at the crossing to alert trains of your position.

Surprisingly, railroad crossing accidents are common.  Trains kill or seriously injure approximately 2,400 people each year.  Accidents generally occur when the driver attempts to beat the train through the crossing, or because the driver simply fails to see the train coming.  People often judge large objects as moving slower than smaller ones, and drivers commonly underestimate train speeds.
