Alloderm Usage

alloderm implantAlloderm was originally introduced to assist burn patients regrow damaged tissue.  By assisting in the growth of new tissue, Alloderm has a variety of uses.  The most common uses for Alloderm are for hernia repair and breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.  However, Alloderm is also used in dental repair procedures, and to treat severe lacerations and burns.

Alloderm Side Effects
The Medical Product Safety Network (MedSun) received numerous reports of problems associated with surgical mesh products for hernia repair.  Problems reported include:

  • mesh explants

  • ring breakage

  • mesh tears

  • defective mesh

  • mesh perforations

  • adhesion issues, and

  • mesh erosion.


Based on these problems, the manufacturers of Alloderm, LifeCell Corporation, issued a voluntary recall of Alloderm in 2005.
